Second Grade A

Second Grade Curriculum HIghlights

This is our preparation year for the sacraments of Reconciliation and Eucharist.  We learn the Ten Commandments and seven sacraments, and how they help us to love God and others.

This year we focus on the basic addition and subtraction facts to 18.  We learn to regroup 2 and 3 digit numbers.  We work on counting money and telling time.  Multiplication facts to 5 are also learned.

The most fun thing about handwriting this year is learning to write in cursive.

Social Studies
We learn about rural and urban cities, consumers, producers and service people who work there.  We also spend time learning about important figures in our nation’s history.  Maps are important too.  We learn to read and design maps.

We spend a large amount of time in second grade on life sciences.  We also have fun learning about the sun, moon and planets, properties of light and sound.

Language Arts
We are becoming more proficient in our writing through journaling, and learning about sentence and paragraph structures.

We are becoming more proficient in Reading by learning new vocabulary and strategies such as, comparing and contrasting characters and stories, main ideas and details, facts and opinions, and sequencing events.  We enjoy many stories in our Reading book, as well as, many selections read independently.

Creative Curriculum

We have fun carving pumpkins, taking a nature hike, writing and sharing reports about places we have been and our family cultures, and learning about animals that are extinct. My classroom is very hands-on, and I incorporate dance, art and music into nearly everything we study. We also look forward to those special celebrations of First Reconciliation and First Eucharist.
